what is laughter yoga ?
Medical research has shown that 1 minute of depression suppresses the immune system for 6 hours, while 1 minute of laughter boosts the immune system for 24 hours.
Laughter Yoga is an exercise routine that combines unconditional laughter with yogic breathing. An Indian physician, Dr. Madan Kataria, started the first Laughter Club in 1995. It is now practised in over 70 countries and in thousands of Laughter Clubs worldwide.
The concept of Laughter Yoga is based on a scientific fact that the body cannot differentiate between pretend and genuine laughter*. This means that the same psychological and physiological benefits are received, regardless of whether laughter is simulated or real.
The Laughter Yoga process therefore begins with group exercises that simulate laughter. At this stage, the laughter may be contrived. However, these exercises that encourage eye contact and a sense of play, ensure it rapidly and naturally turns into genuine and contagious laughter.
Due to its fast results, broad appeal and huge fun factor, Laughter Yoga has become a highly sought after modality in all types of organisations, from the workplace to schools, senior centres, hospitals and community groups.
